We are saying goodbye to the Instagram profile view we are used to. The company is preparing to make a radical change to the platform. The photos and videos in the square profile grid are being replaced by vertical rectangular photos and videos. This change is currently in the testing phase and some users have already started to experience the new format. However, this innovation did not please everyone. Here is the new state of Instagram…
Square photos on your Instagram profile will appear rectangular
Adam Mosseri, the head of the Instagram platform, explained the reason for the change, stating that most of the content uploaded to Instagram today is in vertical format. According to Mosseri, it is quite difficult to fit 4:3 photos or 9:16 videos into a square, and for this reason, Instagram should abandon squares and switch to a rectangular format.
Squares have been a defining feature of Instagram since its early days. Until 2015, only square photos could be uploaded to the platform, but this restriction was eventually lifted. However, squares still remained the dominant format in the profile grid. Now, rectangular views are set to take over this role in the Instagram app.
When it was announced that the app would be renewed, this change was criticized by many users. Especially users who designed according to the square format in their profile grids are worried that this new arrangement could make all their efforts in vain. Despite these reactions, Mosseri argues that the transition to a rectangular format is the right decision.
So, what do you think about this change? Will the removal of the square format damage the spirit of Instagram? Will it be difficult to adapt to the new rectangular format? Don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comments section below.
