Intel has announced its new Arrow Lake-S platform for desktop users. The platform includes the flagship Core Ultra 9 285K with a price tag of $589. Arrow Lake-S brings many innovations such as the new LGA1851 socket, Xe-LPG integrated graphics processing unit (GPU), neural network processor (NPU) and CU-DIMM support. Here are the details
Intel Arrow Lake-S comes with a $589 Core Ultra 9 285K
First, let’s talk about the technical specifications. The Arrow Lake-S series features the new Lion Cove P-core and Skymont E-core. These architectures provide IPC (instructions per clock) increases of 9% and 32% respectively. The Core Ultra 200S series processors do not support hyperthreading, so the flagship Core Ultra 9 285K has 24 cores and 24 threads.
The processor structure utilizes Intel’s Foveros 3D packaging technology and consists of separate tiles for SoC, compute, GPU and I/O. The P-core has 3 MB of L2 cache per core, while the E-core L2 cache and total CPU L3 cache are retained at 4 MB and 36 MB respectively.
In terms of memory and performance details, Arrow Lake-S supports up to 192 GB of DDR5-6400 RAM. In addition, optimizations have been made to improve the graphics performance of the integrated Xe-LPG GPU and a new 13 TOPS performance NPU has been added.
The new LGA1851 socket offers a wider pin array compared to previous generations. This allows for more power and data communication. Thanks to CU-DIMM support, memory expansion and compatibility options are increased.
The new Arrow Lake-S series has a similar pricing tag to Raptor Lake-R. Intel plans to keep this series at an affordable price range to appeal especially to gamers. The $589 price of the flagship Core Ultra 9 285K is especially attractive for users looking for high performance.
Finally, the lack of Hyperthreading support may be seen as a disadvantage for some users, but the high IPC per core boost and improved memory support should make up for it. Meanwhile, the platform is expected to be available with all hardware starting October 24th.
