The microprocessor industry witnessed significant changes in the last quarter of 2024. While Intel’s long-standing dominance weakened, both AMD and Arm strengthened their positions. The current giant is experiencing a contraction in market share.

AMD’s share of the microprocessor pie increased to 22.1 per cent from 21.6 per cent in the previous quarter. This was supported by sales of notebook and server processors, showing AMD’s continued success in these segments.

Similarly, Arm’s share increased by half a percentage point to 10.5 per cent thanks to demand for Arm-based notebooks. Intel, still the market leader, recorded its lowest share ever. With a market share of 67.4 per cent, Intel was down 1.4 percentage points compared to the previous quarter.

Although the technology giant experienced growth in the desktop segment, reaching 68.1 per cent, weakness in notebook and server sales negatively affected overall performance. Research also showed that the notebook market grew 8.2 per cent, exceeding expectations.

The desktop market also saw a 20 per cent increase due to inventory build-up. Server shipments grew by 7 per cent, slightly below seasonal norms. Despite losing market share, Intel’s share price rose 4 per cent.

The latest figures emphasise the increasing competition in the microprocessor industry. The continued advances of AMD and Arm pose a challenge to Intel’s leadership and are likely to intensify in the coming years.
