Intel announced a number of important developments at its Innovation 2023 event. The new processor family, codenamed Meteor Lake, will be unveiled on December 14. Among the most important features of this family are the adoption of the Intel 4 architecture, the transition to Core Ultra instead of the “i” name and artificial intelligence capabilities.
Intel Meteor Lake (Core Ultra series) will be released on December 14
The Meteor Lake family marks a new era for Intel. Following TSMC’s lead, Intel will use Intel 4 process technology. The Meteor Lake family will have four separate tiles. These will be divided into CPU cores, integrated graphics memory (GPU), I/O and SoC specs.
The processor powering Meteor Lake will include 6 performance Redwood Cove cores and 8 efficient Crestmont cores. The integrated GPU will offer a frequency increase compared to current models and double the graphics performance. The GPUs are built on the TSMC N5 architecture.
A neural processing unit (NPU) module optimized for artificial intelligence will allow these tasks to be handled separately. Intel says the dedicated NPU will usher in an era of productive AI in laptops.
The modular design prioritizes both performance and power efficiency. The processor features a new ‘Low Power Island’ of efficient cores. This redesigned chip connects each chip together instead of standard interconnects. By increasing bandwidth through separate tiles, Intel believes that each function will choose the best process.
In addition to Meteor Lake chips, Intel also shared its roadmap until 2025. The company aims to launch processors with Intel 3 architecture in 2024, following the Intel 4 release. More importantly, it aims to get ahead of TSMC with its 20A architecture in 2025.
