The iOS 26 adoption rate has become a major topic of discussion following a new report from Statcounter. The data reveals a record-low adoption speed for Apple’s latest mobile operating system, indicating that a majority of users are choosing to remain on iOS 18 instead.
Breaking Down the Low iOS 26 Adoption Rate
According to data from January 2026, only about 15% to 16% of active iPhones worldwide are running any version of iOS 26. This figure marks one of the slowest adoption rates for Apple in recent years. In contrast, a significant majority of users continue to use the older iOS 18. The current distribution is as follows:
iOS 18 Usage Rates:
- iOS 18.7: 33.8%
- iOS 18.6: 25.2%
- iOS 18.5: 5.6%
iOS 26 Usage Rates:
- iOS 26.1: 10.6%
- iOS 26.2: 4.6%
- iOS 26.0: 1.1%
This situation becomes even more striking when compared to the adoption speeds of previous iOS versions. For instance, by January 2025, approximately 63% of iPhones had already upgraded to iOS 18. Similarly, both iOS 17 and iOS 16 achieved much higher usage rates in their respective periods.
The Main Reason Users Are Hesitant
So, why are users reluctant to switch to iOS 26? One of the most significant reasons is that Apple continues to provide security support for older operating systems. Since users are still receiving critical security updates for iOS 18, they feel no urgent need to upgrade to the new version. Consequently, this makes staying on their current system a more appealing option for many.
