Is the iPhone 15 Pro a threat to Sony and Xbox?
There’s no denying how powerful smartphones have become in recent years, especially the latest iPhone models. At its big event, Apple announced that multiple console games will be released on the iPhone 15 Pro in the coming months. Later this year, you’ll be able to download and play Death Stranding, Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4.
And early next year, Ubisoft is bringing the unreleased Assassin’s Creed Mirage to the App Store. As exciting as this development is, Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox teams have nothing to worry about. Apple has had plenty of opportunities to compete with console makers in the past. But each time, the company has declined.
The arrival of four modern A-list games on iOS is surprising, because Apple has never been fully committed to mobile gaming. Sure, the iPhone maker is more than happy to take its 30% commission from every app developer who sells games in the App Store, but how much effort is Apple putting into marketing Arcade?
Take a look at the top grossing iOS games on the App Store and you’ll see that every game in the Top 25 is available for free download with in-app purchases. There are exceptions, such as best-selling console and PC games like Minecraft, Stardew Valley and Grand Theft Auto, which have enjoyed consistent success on the App Store, but there are very few lucrative premium titles.
While Resident Evil Village and Assassin’s Creed Mirage are well-loved and anticipated games, they are unlikely to catch on in the mobile gaming world. Moreover, it is not entirely clear whether these console-quality games will be exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The A17 Pro could be a very important upgrade. However, if these games cannot be played on older devices, it can be said that Apple will leave many players behind.
It’s also unclear whether these games will be played with touch controls or whether iPhone owners will need a third-party controller. The lack of details is proof that gaming on iPhone is still not a priority for Apple. So, at least for the time being, it seems unlikely that the mobile gaming world will finish off game consoles with the iPhone 15 series.
