Apple has officially announced its support period for iPhones. The company has committed to at least five years of security updates for its latest iPhone 15 series. Samsung and Google, however, guarantee updates for seven years.
Apple sets minimum update support period for iPhone 15
Apple has been forced to announce a minimum period for security updates for internet-connected products under the UK’s Product Safety and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) regulation, which comes into force in April 2024. This regulation aims to improve the security of IoT (Internet of Things) devices in particular.
In accordance with this regulation, Apple stated that it will provide security and operating system update support for five years from the date of the first sale of the iPhone 15 Pro Max model. According to this statement, the iPhone 15 series will receive updates starting from September 22, 2023 until September 22, 2028. However, compared to its competitors, this period is shorter. Google and Samsung offer not only security updates but also operating system updates for their flagship devices for seven years.
Apple is known to offer support for its devices for many years. For example, some iPhone models have received updates for six years or more. This surpasses the support period of many Android devices. However, the fact that Apple has officially set a minimum period of five years is disappointing for iPhone 15 users.
In short, Apple’s five-year update guarantee may seem insufficient compared to Samsung and Google’s seven-year support.
