Apple’s future iPhone 16 Pro models are reportedly set to undergo a considerable overhaul, with both devices predicted to incorporate a periscope lens and a larger screen size. This news contrasts with the iPhone 15 series, where only the iPhone 15 Pro Max will host the telephoto camera technology, as suggested by Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-respected industry analyst.
Size matters: More room for new features
Kuo’s latest insights, published on his Medium blog, propose that the iPhone 16 Pro will be slightly larger than its predecessors. This increase in size – and consequently, internal space – is what will supposedly enable Apple to include the periscope lens in both high-end devices for the first time.
Display industry analyst Ross Young corroborates Kuo’s forecast, hinting at new screen sizes for both iPhone 16 Pro models. The iPhone 16 Pro is projected to sport a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will supposedly feature a 6.9-inch screen. This is a modest yet notable increase from the current iPhone 14 Pro models which have display sizes of 6.1 and 6.7 inches respectively.
A closer look at the periscope lens
The periscope lens is not a novel concept in the smartphone industry, but its inclusion in the iPhone 16 Pro models will undoubtedly enhance the devices’ camera capabilities. Light entering the telephoto lens is reflected by an angled mirror, redirecting it towards the camera’s image sensor. This arrangement allows for a “folded” telephoto setup within the phone, enabling users to zoom in further without sacrificing image quality.
According to Kuo, Cowell, a partner of Apple, is expected to supply the periscope camera system. This feature is set to add a 5-6x optical zoom to the iPhone 16 Pro models, a considerable upgrade from the current iPhone 14 Pro’s 3x optical zoom. It is still uncertain whether the zoom range will be enhanced further for the 2024 Pro and Pro Max models.
The bigger picture
The introduction of a larger screen and periscope lens into the iPhone 16 Pro series illustrates Apple’s continued commitment to innovation and superior user experience. It also reflects the company’s strategy of initially introducing premium features in their high-end models before eventually expanding these technologies to the broader range.
What are your thoughts on this latest prediction for the iPhone 16 Pro models? Do you believe the introduction of a larger screen and a periscope lens will significantly enhance the user experience? We’d love to hear your views in the comments section below.
