The Apple Maps app has been improved over the years with frequent updates. Although it was often criticized when it first came out, some iPhone users now prefer it to Google Maps. Apple Maps, the default maps app on iPhones, may no longer be the default.
iPhone users will be able to change the default map app to Google Maps
Until now, for iPhone users who couldn’t get used to Apple Maps, there was no way to replace iOS’s default Apple Maps app with an alternative app. Until now.
Apple will finally give some iOS users the option to replace the default maps app from Apple Maps with another app of their choice, such as Google Maps or Waze.
Last week Apple’s announcement that the company’s preparations to comply with the EU’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA) are in full swing, and it looks like it will indeed drop its attempt to become a monopoly.
Apple plans to introduce a new default setting in Settings for users. This is being worked on to be implemented by March 2025.
It is unclear whether Apple will offer this feature to all users. However, it will definitely be rolled out to EU users, as new laws require it.
This very important development was among the documents Apple submitted as part of the DMA and somehow went unnoticed until now. It looks like the option to select Google Maps by default will come with iOS 18.
iOS 17.4 was released earlier this month, so EU users should be able to change the default maps app with iOS 18.4 next year. What do you think? Please share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
