iPhone Fold will be released later than expected: Here’s why

Apple’s long-developed foldable iPhone project hasn’t met design expectations. According to internal sources, the model, known as the “iPhone Fold,” is being developed with a book-folding design similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold. However, Apple believes the current design is inadequate both aesthetically and functionally.

The problem of crease marks on foldable device screens has led Apple to reevaluate its process. The company is working on a scratch-free display structure. Increasing the device’s durability and reducing its overall thickness are also among Apple’s priorities. All of these factors complicate the project and lead to delays in the launch schedule.

Technical challenges encountered during the development process are delaying the device’s release until 2026. Apple engineers are working on new solutions to increase durability in both the folding mechanism and the display panel.

Preserving the device’s aesthetic integrity is also a priority during this process. According to details shared by Mark Gurman, deformation issues, particularly in the foldable area of the screen, and panel thickness led the company to redesign the device.

Extensive hardware innovations are also being considered. According to leaked information, the foldable iPhone is expected to feature a 7.8-inch internal display and come with Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro processor. The company is preparing to support the large screen area with features like multitasking and split-screen display. On the software side, a custom interface design suitable for this new form factor is being developed.

To maintain product quality, Apple opted to scrap the existing design and build upon a new architecture rather than expedite the project. While this approach may cause the company to enter the foldable device category later, it aims to deliver a user experience that exceeds expectations. The final version of the foldable iPhone is not expected to be unveiled before 2026.
