Apple and Google, two tech giants, have launched a new cross-platform feature that eliminates a long-standing barrier to file sharing between devices.
File sharing between iPhone and Android is becoming easier
iPhone users can now effortlessly share files with Android device owners. This new functionality, built between Apple’s AirDrop and Google’s Quick Share feature on the Pixel 10 devices, enables cross-platform file transfers.
The file sharing option works on all Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, and Mac, as well as Google devices, including the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Fold.
According to Google, Apple users who want to receive files from a Pixel 10 device must change the AirDrop visibility setting to “Everyone for 10 Minutes.” When this setting is enabled, a file from an Android user will appear on the screen with the same notification and acceptance option as if it were from another iPhone user.
To receive files from Apple devices, Pixel 10 users must also enable the “Everyone for 10 Minutes” setting or enter “Receive Mode” on the Quick Share page. All received files are saved in the Pixel device’s “Files” app.
Google states that it designed this interoperability feature between Quick Share and AirDrop with a multi-layered security approach to ensure a secure sharing experience regardless of platform. The system includes a secure sharing channel, built-in platform protections for Android and iOS, and a required consent requirement before a file is received.
Connections between devices are direct and peer-to-peer, so no data is routed through a server. During file transfers in both directions, the Apple or Pixel 10 device displays the recipient’s device name on-screen for verification.
This feature currently only works in the “Everyone for 10 Minutes” AirDrop sharing mode, but Google has stated that it intends to support “Contacts Only” mode in the future through collaboration with Apple. Cross-platform compatibility for AirDrop and Quick Share is now available.
