The portable handheld console market is growing rapidly. Home to everything from the Steam Deck to the ASUS ROG Ally, the market has yet to see a major Sony product. While it has announced a device called the PlayStation Portal , it seems Sony has bigger ambitions.
Sony may be exploring a portable PlayStation
Tom Henderson, a well-known name in the gaming industry, hinted that Sony could release a dedicated portable game console. The famous name said that the increasing interest in portable gaming devices has marked the Gamescom 2024 event. This means that Sony could be working on a device similar to the PSP.
Henderson didn’t give any details on the subject, but he did say in a post on X that “there are many more options and improvements coming soon,” so he warned users who are considering purchasing the current portable consoles.
This actually follows the unexpected success of Sony’s PlayStation Portal, which was released last year. Rather than being a standalone device, PS Portal allows users to access their PlayStation 5 consoles from anywhere .
Sony is closely monitoring the market for portable consoles like the Steam Deck and the continuing popularity of the Nintendo Switch, while the positive reception to Portal could lead to a return for a platform like the PlayStation Vita.
Sony has not yet confirmed it, but considering that Xbox is also working on a portable device, the possibility of a portable PlayStation could have a big impact on the industry.
