SpaceX currently has many contracts with NASA. The company, which works with US institutions in its space adventure, has recently agreed with US intelligence. SpaceX has allegedly signed a $1.8 billion deal with the US National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).
SpaceX and the US agree to build a spy satellite network
SpaceX will work with the US to build a network of hundreds of spy satellites, according to new details. The latest agreement with the National Reconnaissance Office will enable the space company to strengthen US intelligence.
According to Reuters, SpaceX’s new “Starshield” unit will work to improve the NRO’s observation capabilities. In this context, Elon Musk’s company will develop a new satellite network for the US. It was stated that the satellites will function in coordination and operate in low orbit.
The $1.8 billion contract reflects reports previously reported in February. According to claims at the time, SpaceX had signed a secret agreement with an unnamed government agency. Reuters linked the contract to the NRO and its goals of modernizing the US intelligence collection infrastructure from space.
Official records also showed that SpaceX launched prototype satellites for the program that were not made public. According to the report, if these satellites are successful, the NRO will share the network with military and intelligence analysts. This will allow for faster and more accurate information on targets around the world.
An NRO spokesperson confirmed that the agency is working to create the “most capable, diverse and flexible” intelligence network. However, he did not confirm whether a deal had been struck with SpaceX. The scale and timeline of the Starshield project have not yet been announced.
