Is the affordable Tesla Model 2 canceled?

Ana sayfa / News

Tesla made an important announcement for the Model 2, which has been eagerly awaited for years and is rumored to be affordable, and pulled expectations in a different direction. Elon Musk may have dashed hopes for the long-rumored $25,000 electric vehicle. At his last financial meeting, he stated that “the future is in fully autonomous driving” and that Tesla will focus on the robotaxi called Cybercab rather than an affordable model. In other words, we may see the design and price features of the Model 2 in Cybercab, albeit partially.

Cybercab will have a price tag below 30 thousand dollars according to Musk’s promises. Moreover, it is stated that this model will not include a steering wheel or pedals. In other words, it is a fully driverless car. If everything goes as planned, Cybercab could revolutionize urban transportation.

But there is an important issue here: Legal regulations for a fully autonomous vehicle need to be accepted all over the world. According to the current plan, Cybercab will hit the roads if the necessary permits are obtained; otherwise, the vehicle may be equipped with some controls for driving that requires minimal intervention.

Cybercab will be built on Tesla’s Next-Gen platform. This platform will reduce production costs and lead to a more compact vehicle than the Model 3 and Model Y. Cybercab, which is thought to be a compact crossover in terms of design, has a three-door design without rear windows. Musk expects Cybercab to be launched in 2026-2027. This date is actually quite close to the previously planned release date for the Model 2.

In short, Elon Musk’s dream of an affordable Tesla announced in 2020 may not come true with the Model 2, but the Cybercab could make it a reality. If all goes as planned, Cybercab, combined with Tesla’s autonomous driving technology, will reach a wide audience with its affordable price.
