New debate for Huawei ban in the US
The Huawei restriction, which started with the Trump administration, continued under the Biden administration. Accordingly, the two senators began to criticize the tough stance on exports to China. He questions whether the US is achieving its national security goals without unduly harming its competitiveness.
US Senator Alex Padilla and Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren filed an application with the Department of Commerce. Accordingly, they expressed concerns about further restricting US technology sales to Chinese companies such as Huawei. He stated that blocking Chinese companies would cause the US to fall behind in important sectors such as semiconductors.
Political figures stated that such moves also harm the competitiveness of American semiconductor companies. He said Qualcomm is lagging behind in the market because it cannot sell its 5G chips to Chinese companies. Accordingly, he called on the Commerce Department to “pause unilateral export controls.”
The Senator and Congressman wants a review of all trade arrangements with China. He believes that unilateral sanctions are unnecessarily harming American companies in the process. They also do not help to reduce security risks.
Technology companies have also repeatedly warned that being cut off from the Chinese market could hurt their profitability. Brands such as NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Intel have lobbied against some of the measures. However, the US stance has not yet softened.
