Instagram has begun testing an innovation that will completely transform users’ feed experience on the platform. The platform is introducing a control feature that allows users to manually choose which types of content they want to see more of or less of. This move gives users complete control over the content the algorithm recommends.
Instagram’s Algorithm Revolution
Instagram President Adam Mosseri shared the first screenshot of the new feature on his account. The images show that users will be able to specify topics they want and don’t want to see in their feeds in two separate sections: “You want to see more of” and “You want to see less of.” For example, if a user wants content related to horror movies to appear more frequently, they add that topic to the first section.
The algorithm then tailors its recommendations accordingly. If a genre doesn’t interest the user, such as comedy, it is added to the “You want to see less of” list, reducing its visibility in the feed.
Until now, the platform has primarily recommended content based on user interactions. Engagement levels, such as the number of times a video was watched and the number of likes, shares, or comments on the content, were factors that determined which posts the algorithm would prioritize.
However, this method couldn’t fully adapt to users’ changing interests and moods over time. The new feature addresses this issue by offering more flexible personalization without having to completely reset the algorithm.
Instagram previously offered an option to completely reset the algorithm. However, this option also resulted in the loss of content users actually liked and wanted to continue viewing.
The new algorithm management feature allows for more precise adjustments without sacrificing the personalized experience. This allows users to tailor their feeds to their current preferences. The launch date of this feature, currently in testing, will be announced in the coming days.
