For the last few months, the United States and TikTok have not been on good terms. But with the latest development, it seems like the rope between them will break. So much so that the US Congress has approved a bill that could impose a ban on TikTok.
US Congress approves bill that could impose a ban on TikTok
The US is concerned that the Chinese government is accessing the data of US users of TikTok, owned by China-based ByteDance. For this reason, Congress has been working on a bill that could ban the app, and President Joe Biden said he would sign it. Today, the expected happened.
The House of Representatives voted on a bill to ban TikTok in line with the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversaries of Controlled Applications Act. 65 out of 435 House members voted no. 352 people voted yes for this bill, which only 290 people would have needed to accept.
The bill was approved by the Parliament, but this process is not yet complete. Now eyes are turned to the Senate, the other wing of the United States Congress. For those who don’t know, the Senate is one of the two legislative bodies, along with the House of Representatives.
If the Senate approves this bill, the process will reach the final stage and President Joe Biden will make the final decision. At this point, it should be noted that Biden said in his statement in the past weeks that he would sign this law when the word came to him.
What will happen if Biden signs the bill?
If the bill to ban TikTok is signed by Biden, the social media platform will be removed from the App Store and Play Store. It is not known what will happen for those who have already downloaded the application. At this point, estimates are that no more updates will be released for users.
