In Italy, the Polizia Stradale (Highway Police) managing the motorways in the Veneto region has introduced a specially equipped Tesla Model X electric vehicle for service. This marks the end of an era of powerful sports cars traditionally used by the Italian police. So, why Tesla?
Italian police transition to electric vehicles with Tesla Model X
CAV purchased this special Tesla Model X as part of a tender to provide a zero-emission vehicle for the Polizia Stradale. The vehicle is outfitted with standard police colors and necessary lighting according to police specifications. Italy’s new electric police cars will patrol areas with high traffic congestion like Venice.
This initiative offers CAV and Polizia Stradale the opportunity to experience the use of an electric vehicle in patrol activities. It’s considered within the framework of developing and utilizing new vehicles and technologies to enhance service efficiency and environmental sustainability.
Polizia Stradale’s Tesla Model X comes with a 100 kWh battery and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 262 km/h. These specifications indicate it’s the Dual Motor version, though the top speed may suggest the Plaid version.
CAV CEO Maria Rosaria Anna Campitelli and President Monica Manto emphasize that deploying this vehicle is a combination of efforts to optimize surveillance services for road safety and search for environmental sustainability solutions.
Prefetto Renato Cortese, the Director of Special Services of Polizia di Stato, highlights the additional value of collaboration with highway operators and modernization processes towards sustainability for road safety strategies. This innovative step sets an example for integrating sustainable technologies and eco-friendly vehicles into authoritative use.
The use of Tesla Model X by Polizia Stradale signifies not only technological advancements but also an increasing awareness of environmental responsibility. Could this development inspire police departments in other countries to take similar steps? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
