Netflix has started working on a Sifu movie, based on the popular martial arts-themed game. The platform has decided to bring the production to the big screen and announced that it has teamed up with screenwriter T.S. Nowlin, known for the Maze Runner series.

Developed by Sloclap and released in 2022, Sifu garnered widespread acclaim. Within its first three weeks, the game sold over a million copies, covering its production costs. The story follows a martial artist’s student on a quest for revenge after the death of his master.

The film will be produced by action cinema icon Chad Stahelski, along with 87Eleven Entertainment. Stahelski, known for the John Wick series, will be working alongside Jason Spitz and Alex Young as producers. The project also involves Story Kitchen, known for its work on game adaptations like Tomb Raider and Just Cause.

Here’s Microsoft’s new game-focused tool

Microsoft has introduced an AI-powered tool called Muse for game developers. It generates the next scene on its own.

Netflix commented on the project, saying, “Sifu’s compelling story and innovative gameplay make it a perfect candidate for adaptation into cinema. With Chad Stahelski’s creative vision and T.S. Nowlin’s talent, we are confident this adaptation will be an exciting addition to our growing catalog of game-based content.”

T.S. Nowlin has previously worked on projects like Maze Runner and The Adam Project, while Chad Stahelski and 87Eleven Entertainment continue to work on adaptations like Highlander and Ghost of Tsushima.

This move follows Netflix’s commitment to expanding its action-oriented entertainment, following the announcement of the Extraction series starring Omar Sy.
