Focusing on the iconic DC character Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux hit theaters on October 4. Following the success of the first film, which earned Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar in 2019, expectations were naturally high for the sequel. However, recent data shows that things didn’t go as planned, as Joker 2 fell short of expectations at the box office, raising some concerns.
Joker 2 Disappoints at the Box Office
Despite adding a star like Lady Gaga to its cast after the success of the first film, Joker 2 unfortunately did not make the anticipated impact. With a budget of $200 million, the movie grossed $40 million in the U.S. during its opening weekend. The target was set between $50 and $65 million, with some even predicting it could push to $70 million.
Outside of the U.S., the film grossed $81 million, bringing its worldwide opening total to $121 million. However, the second film needs to gross at least $450 million to break even.
Some are wondering if Joker: Folie à Deux will fail to meet expectations. Following the first film, this sequel has received mixed reviews, leading to concerns that it may not be as well-received.
The first Joker film, made on a modest $65 million budget, made a major impact by grossing $96.2 million in the U.S. during its opening weekend. By the end of its run, it had surpassed $1 billion, securing its place among the most successful films in history.
