Kim Kardashian answered questions about the use of artificial intelligence in a new video published by Vanity Fair this week. The reality TV star blamed OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT for giving her incorrect answers while studying for law exams. Kardashian has been trying to pursue a law career through unconventional means since 2019.
Kim Kardashian blames ChatGPT for failing law exams
Vanity Fair’s YouTube video was part of a special series in which celebrities answer questions while connected to a polygraph. Kardashian was questioned by Teyana Taylor, star of “One Battle After Another.” Kardashian passed the preliminary exam, known as the “baby bar,” in 2021. According to Entertainment Weekly, she received her law degree in May and took the bar exam in July, but Kardashian is still awaiting the results.
When Taylor asked if she “sees AI as a friend,” Kardashian replied, “No. I use it for legal advice.” She explained that when she needed to know the answer to a question, she took a photo of it and uploaded it to the app. When asked playfully if she was cheating, she responded by explaining that she only did this to study for her exams, but that the app frequently gave the wrong answer. Kardashian said, “ChatGPT is always buggy. It’s constantly making me fail my exams.”
Kardashian also stated that she got angry at ChatGPT (referring to it as “it”) and yelled, “You failed me, why did you do this?” She then claimed the bot “reacted back.” According to Kardashian, the AI offered comforting responses like, “It teaches you to just trust your own instincts. You knew the answer all along.”
Generative AI models are known for giving wrong or illogical answers, essentially because they don’t truly understand what they’re saying. The answers this technology provides can be likened to a magic trick that appears to be capable of reasoning, but the system is actually just trying to predict what the next word will be, statistically speaking. This is the main reason why AI chatbots struggle with seemingly simple questions like how many “R”s are in the word “strawberry.”
It was learned that Kardashian and Taylor conducted this interview to promote a new show called “All’s Fair,” which premiered on Hulu on Tuesday. The show is also notable for being one of the worst-reviewed TV shows on Metacritic, with a score of just 18 out of 100.
Kim Kardashian’s use of AI for her legal studies, and the problems she experienced, have sparked a new debate in the tech world about the reliability of AI. So, do you trust AI tools like ChatGPT for studying or researching important topics?
