The Last of Us, produced by HBO and starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay, was released at the beginning of this year and as soon as it was released, it became a series worthy of being nominated for awards in many fields. While we thought that the series would consist of two seasons, there was a pleasing development.
The Last of Us could have 4 seasons!
In a recent interview, Craig Mazin, the director of The Last of Us, was asked if HBO had given a good budget increase for the second season, given the success and scope of the series. Mazin outdid himself and gave a very exciting answer to the question.
“Even if we have a principled debate about what’s needed for season two, season three or season four, I would say that HBO is always working in good faith and they will provide a budget that is worthy of the creative value of the show.”
The interviewer then asked Mazin if the vision he and Naughty Dog boss Neil Druckmann presented to HBO was four seasons.
“Yeah, I realize I said four, but you never know. It could end up being three or five. But four seems like a good number. Because of the story we’re telling, some seasons will need fewer episodes, some seasons will need more episodes.”
The first season of the series will run for nine episodes, covering the events of The Last of Us and the downloadable DLC pack The Last of Us: Left Behind. HBO announced that The Last of Us had been renewed for a second season just two and a half weeks after the first season ended in March. So a second season is definitely coming.
Druckmann and Mazin, who also co-wrote and co-directed the game series on which the series is based, previously confirmed their intention to make a third season, stating that the second season would not be able to cover the entirety of The Last of Us Part 2, which was released for PS4 in 2020.
When asked how the second season of the series is going and if the role of Abby has been cast, Mazin replied:
“Maybe. The strike stopped us in our tracks. Things were going swimmingly and in fact Abby was the first role we wanted to tackle. We have a pretty good track record of making big casting announcements and people saying, ‘Really? People may not agree, but I think we’ve done the right thing so far and the audience thinks we’ve done the right thing and the Academy thinks we’ve done the right thing.”
Who do you think is the best actress for the role of Abby? Will Bella Ramsay play Ellie in the second season? What could be told in the third and fourth seasons? Please don’t forget to share your thoughts with us in the comments.
