However, recent reports show that users are switching from Windows to Linux. According to this, Linux usage rate is at an all-time high.

According to a report by Statcounter, there have been unexpected changes in desktop market share. Accordingly, Linux reached a 4 percent usage rate for the first time in its history. This represents a critical rise for Linux, which had only 1.53 percent share in late 2020.
Industry observers said there were several key factors contributing to Linux’s growth on the desktop. Foremost among them are the very demanding system requirements of Windows 11. This made older PCs incompatible with Windows. Users also preferred to switch to Linux.
On the other hand, Linux’s installation process and user-friendliness have made it easier to try the operating system on older hardware. Ongoing software and application support for Linux has been highlighted by the rise of cloud-based applications.
The usage rates for the desktop market for February 2024 are as follows:
- Windows – 72 percent
- macOS – 15 percent
- Linux – 4 percent
- ChromeOS – 2 percent
- Other – 6 percent
Linux is expected to continue to grow as prices increase in the computer market. Instead of buying new pieces of hardware, users prefer to install different operating systems on their old computers.
