In a US case, a car owner was able to recover his stolen BMW with an Apple AirTag. In the theft in California, he was able to locate the BMW without the assistance of the police. The AirTag owner confronted the thieves and found his vehicle.
How was the BMW recovered with AirTag?
A man named Philip Obando recently realized that his BMW had been stolen from in front of his house. However, Obando had hidden an AirTag in the car in case of theft. Using Apple’s Find My app, Obando was able to locate where the thief was traveling with the BMW.
The dash cam even captured the criminal smoking, sleeping and even washing the car. This not only deciphered the identity of the thief, but also made it easier to locate the vehicle. Unbeknownst to the local police, the user went to the vehicle’s location and scared the thief by remotely activating the car horn.
While Obando got his car back without incident, experts say confronting criminals can be extremely dangerous. This means that theft cases should be left to the police. The thief also unwittingly left items in the vehicle, such as a wallet, to help police track him down.
AirTag has been used in theft detection many times before. Unless the AirTag user puts the product in Lost Mode, it is very difficult to find the owner. This makes it difficult for thieves.
Apple introduced AirTag products in 2021 to prevent the loss of valuables. But these products are also being used for children, pets or couples.
