Earlier this week, Apple released a swift update: macOS Sonoma 14.4.1, available for download on Monday evening. The update, slightly less than 1.15 GB on a fully patched system, fixes some irritating bugs. Here are the details…

macOS 14.4 had been causing issues for Mac users. Certain USB-C hubs, especially those integrated directly into monitors, suddenly stopped working correctly, and accessories like keyboards lost their connection to the Mac. The worst part was the Java applications which could continuously crash, as announced by Oracle, up to the latest JDK.

Apple’s latest update, macOS 14.4.1, includes various bug fixes and significant security improvements. The update addresses issues with USB-C hubs and Java applications, enhancing user experience.

According to Apple’s release notes, USB(-C) hubs should now be recognized again in macOS 14.4.1, even on external displays. The problem with Java crashes has been resolved. Finally, a problem related to copy protection systems for audio unit plugins in Logic Pro and other professional DAWs, which suddenly could not be opened or refused validation, has been fixed.

The update size is approximately 1.15 GB. macOS Sonoma 14.4, especially with the problems experienced in certain USB-C hubs integrated into monitors and in Java applications, had been causing discomfort among users.

As per Apple’s notes, macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 aims to ensure the proper functioning of these hubs and Java applications. macOS 14.4.1 also fixes two security vulnerabilities that allowed possible code execution through manipulated images.

These vulnerabilities were found in CoreMedia and WebRTC components and were identified by Google’s Project Zero team. Apple also addressed these two security vulnerabilities in iOS 17.4.1 and iPadOS 17.4.1. These updates are part of Apple’s steps to enhance the security of its devices.

macOS Ventura 13.6.6 and Safari 17.4.1 also contain similar security fixes. The significance of these updates for users, especially in terms of security impact, and the effectiveness of Apple’s efforts to keep its operating systems up to date are important topics.
