Google and MediaTek announced at CES 2025 a new collaboration focused on enhancing the smart home experience. The two companies will work on the Filogic MT7903 chipset designed specifically for Google Home devices. The new chip aims to improve connectivity and responsiveness within the smart home ecosystem.
MediaTek and Google to develop smart home chips
Filogic MT7903 will work towards the adoption of Thread, the core network protocol of the Matter smart home standard. Low-energy networking technology promises uninterrupted communication between hundreds of devices, even if one device fails or disconnects.
Because it uses the Matter standard, the chipset will be able to work between smart home devices from different manufacturers, simplifying both installation and management for users. MediaTek also confirmed that the chip will include tri-band Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6 and Thread radios to provide comprehensive connectivity.
The offload feature in Thread will allow the main processor to sleep while maintaining network connections. This collaboration actually follows rumors that Google may switch from Qualcomm to MediaTek for the modem in the Pixel 10 series.
It is possible to say that the partnership between the two technology giants will grow even more over time. Of course, it is not the first collaboration. MediaTek previously announced that its Dimensity 9400 chip will support the Google Gemini Nano productive AI model. It also partnered with Nvidia for Project DIGITS, an artificial intelligence development platform.
