Taiwan-based MediaTek, a long-time producer of processors for affordable smartphones, has announced its new contender in the mid-range segment: the MediaTek Dimensity 8400, which aims to rival Qualcomm.
Dimensity 8400: A Breakthrough for Mid-Range Processors
Since Apple transitioned to ARM architecture in 2020, Qualcomm and MediaTek have been locked in fierce competition on the Android side. With the evolution of ARM-based processors and their adoption in modern computers, this race has intensified. Other players like Huawei’s Kirin and Samsung’s Exynos have also seen significant performance improvements. As ARM-based processors gain traction in Windows laptops, affordable, high-performance ARM chips have become increasingly sought after.
Today, MediaTek unveiled the Dimensity 8400, which has already outperformed Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 in initial tests.
MediaTek Dimensity 8400 stands out as a significant step forward in the mid-range processor category. The processor features eight Cortex-A725 cores capable of reaching speeds up to 3.25 GHz, offering a 32% performance boost over its predecessor, Dimensity 8300. Furthermore, MediaTek claims the chip reduces peak power consumption by up to 44%, though real-world performance will vary depending on factors like operating system and software optimization.
For graphics, the Dimensity 8400 is equipped with the Mali-G720 MC7 GPU, a notable upgrade from the Mali-G615 MC6 in the previous Dimensity 8300. On the AI front, it integrates the MediaTek NPU 880, supporting advanced AI capabilities through MediaTek’s Dimensity Agentic Engine.
Additional features include:
- 4K HDR video support
- 5G connectivity
- Compatibility with WQHD+ (1440p) displays at 144 Hz refresh rates
Xiaomi is expected to use the Dimensity 8400 in its upcoming POCO X7 Pro model, which could set a new benchmark for mid-range smartphones.
