Chipset manufacturers are improving and launching the satellite connectivity feature in 2023. We already know that Qualcomm announced “Snapdragon Satellite” connectivity for smartphones in January, and Samsung recently unveiled its two-way satellite direct connectivity system for Exynos chips. Today, MediaTek announced the company is to unveil its phone-to-satellite communication system for Android phones. Here are the details about MediaTek Satellite technology…

MediaTek brings satellite connectivity to Android phones

The phone processor manufacturer is introducing support for 3GPP Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) in its chips. According to the official announcement, the new technology will be available in smartphones launching soon. Also, MediaTek announced that it will launch support for 5G New Radio NTN (NR-NTN) in the future alongside the new satellite connectivity.

MediaTek’s Satellite Connect Service will also be similar to Qualcomm’s and Samsung’s systems, with two-way messaging via satellite and emergency SOS features. Although the chipset manufacturer improves this technology for smartphones, it claims that this technology is aimed to be available in the future on some products, including cars.

MediaTek confirmed that the new chip will be available on two smartphones, the Motorola defy 2 and CAT S75. These devices will be the first phones to offer MediaTek’s satellite features and to launch in the second quarter of the year in North America, Latin America, and Canada.

MediaTek explains, “Satellite networks aim to fill gaps in mobile coverage, offering a reliable way for devices to communicate in remote locations. With satellite-enabled smartphones, consumers can stay in touch when they are hiking, driving in secluded areas, on a boat, or in other situations where there has traditionally been no connectivity; this will not only provide users with peace of mind, but also enable them to request assistance in emergency situations.”
