Mercedes Makes Major Battery Move

Ana sayfa / News

According to reports in the Korean press, Mercedes-Benz has reached an agreement with LG Energy Solution (LGES) for a massive battery order, surpassing its Chinese competitors. Some of the batteries, with a total capacity of 107 GWh, will be supplied to the US and the rest to Europe. While not officially confirmed, the agreement is believed to involve 46-series cylindrical cells.

Official documents released by LGES indicate that the agreement is divided into two parts. Accordingly, 75 GWh of batteries will be delivered to the US between July 2029 and December 2037, and 32 GWh to Europe between August 2028 and December 2035.

The monetary value of the order has not been disclosed. However, South Korean media reported that based on current prices for 46-series cylindrical cells, the agreement is worth approximately €9.3 billion.

LGES, which currently produces this format in South Korea, is preparing to open a new factory in Arizona, USA, in 2026. It has been learned that batteries for Mercedes-Benz will be manufactured at this factory. This factory will also supply batteries to Tesla and Rivian.

Mercedes-Benz has made no secret of its interest in cylindrical cells. The brand used these cells in the Concept AMG GT XX, based on the new AMG.EA platform. However, it was previously announced that prismatic cells would be used in platforms such as the MMA for the CLA and the MB.EA-M for the new C-Class and GLC.

It is reported that cylindrical cells could be used with batteries that do not require a module level on the MB.EA-L platform, designed for large vehicles. If the cell format is confirmed, this order would be LG Energy’s largest single order for 46-series cylindrical cells.

The collaboration between the two companies has strengthened recently. In October 2024, LGES signed another contract with Mercedes-Benz for 50.5 GWh. South Korean media reported that that agreement also covered 46-series cells and that deliveries would begin in 2028. With this new agreement, the total volume between the two companies exceeded 150 GWh.
