At this year’s SIGGRAPH 2025 event, Meta unveiled two new prototype headsets that showcase the latest advancements in virtual reality technologies: Tiramisu and Boba 3. Developed by the company’s Reality Labs Research unit, these devices feature significant technological leaps in resolution, field of view, and AI-powered processing techniques. Meta states that both models significantly improve the VR experience compared to previous generations.
Meta Launches New VR Headsets
The Tiramisu model focuses on visual quality. It features custom micro-OLED panels that offer 3.6 times the resolution and pixel density of the Meta Quest 3. The panel contrast ratio has been increased threefold, and the device can reach peak brightness of up to 1,400 nits.
This provides significantly more realistic imaging performance than previous models in terms of light gradations, depth perception, and color accuracy. NVIDIA’s DLSS technology is used in conjunction with Unreal Engine 5 to render high-resolution virtual scenes.
Despite this high quality, the device is limited to a horizontal field of view of only 30 degrees. This can lead some users to describe the experience as feeling like a “virtual box.” Despite this, Meta emphasizes that it offers the most realistic VR image to date.
The Boba 3, on the other hand, shifts its focus to a wider field of view. Aiming to provide an experience closer to the natural vision capacity of the human eye, this model offers a 180-degree horizontal and 120-degree vertical field of view.
These figures represent a significant increase compared to the Quest 3’s 110×96-degree field of view. The Boba 3 is equipped with panels offering 4K x 4K resolution per eye. AI-powered technologies such as DLSS are also utilized for image processing. However, Meta has not yet shared the technical details of the device’s dedicated GPU.
Due to its high hardware requirements and advanced specifications, the Boba 3 will be positioned squarely in the premium segment. Meta plans to release the device as soon as possible.
Pricing is expected to be similar to higher-end VR headsets like the Apple Vision Pro. The launch of the device is likely to further intensify consumer competition for the Meta.
