Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Threads platforms, has announced that political content on these platforms will now be recommended less. It is claimed that the reason for this decision is that Meta does not want these platforms, such as X, to become politically oriented. Additionally, we can say that the company has been implementing this policy on Facebook, which it owns, for some time.
Meta doesn’t like political content
It has long been known that political content generates less revenue compared to other entertaining content. Therefore, it can be argued that Meta made this decision not with the noble aim of preventing political polarization, but rather to generate more revenue. However, it is important to note that the current tense atmosphere in the United States, with the ongoing election process, is also a significant factor here.
It is speculated that Meta’s algorithms that push political content into the background may also restrict breaking news. Considering that a significant portion of news content is political, it seems difficult to think otherwise. We can say that the company’s goal here is to prevent its social media platforms from becoming news-focused like X.
However, if the people you follow frequently share posts about politics and current events, it doesn’t seem easy to escape this environment. At the end of the day, whether or not to succumb to political polarization will still be up to the users.
What do you think about this? Do you think Meta’s strategy is correct? You can easily share your answers with us in the comments section below. Your opinions are valuable to us.
