Meta Glasses Security Update Is Mandatory, Email Warns Owners

Meta glasses security update: Meta emails owners to install a mandatory fix in the Meta AI app to keep using their glasses. Here is what we know.

Meta is telling owners of its AI glasses to install a Meta glasses security update that it calls mandatory. In an email sent on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Meta says owners must install “the latest security update” through the Meta AI app “to keep using your glasses,” adding that the process “takes a few minutes.”

What the Meta Glasses Security Update Email Says

ShiftDelete.Net received the message at 20:03 UTC on October 29. We checked it before reporting: it came from Meta AI’s official notification address (notification@email.meta.com, with replies set to noreply@email.meta.com), and its “Update now” button points to meta.ai/devices/ota, which then forwards to Meta’s own AI glasses release notes page. Every other link in the email goes to meta.com, Meta’s privacy policy and its smart glasses support pages.

The email has the subject line “A mandatory security update for your glasses” and is labeled “Update required.” It shows a pair of Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer frames but does not list which models need the update.

What Meta Has Not Said Yet

The email does not explain what security problem the update fixes, give a firmware version number, or set a deadline. It also does not spell out what happens to glasses that are not updated beyond the line “To keep using your glasses.” When this story was published, we could not find a public Meta post describing a new security fix for its glasses. We will update this article if Meta shares details.

The timing follows a rough month for the product line. Earlier in October, some Ray-Ban Meta owners reported that their glasses saved audio recordings and transcripts without the “Hey Meta” wake phrase, and Meta told Android Authority the issue “has been resolved.” We covered that privacy bug here. In July, Meta also said a mandatory firmware update would disable the camera if the glasses detect that the capture LED was tampered with or destroyed. There is no confirmation that today’s update is linked to either case.

How to Install It, and How to Spot a Fake

Open the Meta AI app on your phone with your glasses paired and follow the update prompt there. You do not need to use the email link at all, which is the safest habit with any “urgent update” message.

That matters because mandatory update emails are a common phishing trick. Meta’s real message came from an email.meta.com address and only linked to meta.ai and meta.com. Any similar email from another domain, or one that asks for your password or payment details, should be ignored.

Meta’s security update policy promises at least five years of security updates for its glasses, from October 2028 for the first Ray-Ban Meta to September 2031 for Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3). The lineup has also been expanding into new markets, including Turkey, so a mandatory update now reaches a much larger group of owners.
