Meta has introduced the prototype version of its AR glasses called Orion in recent months. Although it is far from being a product ready for the end user, Meta describes this device as ‘the AirPods of the AR world’. Accordingly, the company has big goals with Orion.
Meta Orion could be the AirPods of the AR world
According to Meta, the prototype creates the same sensation as a normal pair of glasses. Accordingly, Meta’s approach to AR is similar to Apple’s, which wants to improve the user experience rather than completely change the real world.
Speaking on the subject, a Meta spokesperson described Orion as a ‘silent computer’. He reminded that people listen to music using AirPods and are isolated from the world. Accordingly, he said that he could follow to interact with their environment.
This approach differs from Meta’s previous virtual reality (VR) efforts, which aim to put users in a completely digital environment. With Orion, the company wants to create AR experiences that integrate with the user’s physical environment.
Orion has a screen that allows users to see other people’s faces. This feature means that it differs from existing XR glasses. So glasses like Vision Pro usually cover most of the user’s face.
Holographic displays built into the frames of the glasses can project virtual screens by combining digital content with the real world. But the Orion prototype is not yet commercially available. However, it is planned to reduce the production cost of approximately 10 thousand dollars and come to the market as affordable.
