Meta’s Twitter rival may make its debut soon

It seems the clock is ticking down to the unveiling of Meta’s contender in the social media race against Twitter. As per digital media marketing specialist, Lia Haberman, the much-speculated about app is fast approaching its completion, with the launch possibly as early as the end of June.

An “Instagram for thoughts”

The fresh insights into Meta’s Twitter rival suggest it might be best described as an “Instagram for your thoughts.” Modeled after the popular image-sharing platform, Instagram, this upcoming app is expected to utilize the same login credentials, so existing Instagram users can sync their profiles and followers seamlessly. Even blocked accounts and filtered words on Instagram will supposedly transfer over to the new platform.

According to Haberman, this platform won’t just mirror Instagram in terms of users’ profiles but will be a decentralized app that is compatible with other platforms like Mastodon. This integration means users should be able to engage with users on different platforms without continually switching between apps.

The New Kid on the Block

The rumored platform will reportedly limit text updates to 500 characters, less than an Instagram caption, but enough for a snappy comment or two. Users may be able to attach links, photos, and videos of up to five minutes duration. This is much shorter than Twitter’s recently introduced two-hour video sharing feature.

Similar to Twitter and other platforms, Meta’s app will offer features like likes, replies, and reposts. If the leaked marketing slide obtained by Haberman is anything to go by, the platform bears a strong resemblance to Twitter and Bluesky with a sprinkle of Instagram’s design aesthetics.

Earlier in March, Meta confirmed that it was “exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates.” As anticipation mounts for its unveiling, only time will tell if it will be the game-changer to rival Twitter. Although no official name has been announced yet, insider reports refer to it by a couple of codenames like Barcelona and P92.
