Intel has geared up to take on rivals like TSMC in the chip market. It announced that it has renamed its team that manages chip manufacturing services as Intel Foundry. The company also announced that the first major customer of these operations will be Microsoft.
Microsoft to use Intel 18A for AI chip
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella attended the Intel Foundry Direct Connect event to confirm the partnership. He said that the semiconductor chip produced by Microsoft will use Intel’s upcoming 18A architecture. This means a huge market for 18A.
The details of Microsoft’s chip design are not yet known. However, the software giant announced plans for two AI-focused processors last year. Using Intel’s architecture in production will greatly contribute to Microsoft’s artificial intelligence and machine learning efforts.
In a statement, CEO Nadella called the partnership exciting and “crucial for industry transformation”. He said there is a need for a “reliable” supply of the most advanced chips. At this point, it should be noted that TSMC is located in Taiwan and is under pressure from China.
On the other hand, Intel showed the roadmap of the 18A process. At the same time, Intel announced that 14A is also under development. It stated that it will work together with industrial companies such as Cadence, Synopsys and Ansys in chip production.
Intel is expected to grow rapidly with the participation of Microsoft on the artificial intelligence side. On the other hand, Microsoft wants to lay the groundwork for OpenAI and its own research with its own semiconductor chips.
