Microsoft recently launched the Dall-E 2 supported Bing Image Creator tool. It was stated that this service, which allows users to create images from text, could cause trouble for Microsoft. Some adjustments were made due to copyright concerns.
Why is the word Disney restricted in Bing Image Creator?
Recently, hundreds of TikTok and Instagram users have started creating Disney and Pixar-style posters from unexpected objects. While some turned their dog into a superhero, others designed their car like a Pixar poster.
When asked for terms like “ Disney movie poster ,” the Bing Image Creator tool produced images containing Disney’s font, colors, and designs. He also raised intellectual property issues by putting the Disney logo in the images .
This situation attracted the attention of the media giant. Reports have surfaced that Disney has informed Microsoft about potential copyright issues. Then Microsoft banned the use of the term “Disney” in the vehicle. It also showed users warnings that the word was against their policies.
The company currently allows using “Disney” in Bing Image Creator. However, in visuals such as Disney posters, they deliberately make logos and fonts unreadable. Legal experts also underlined that reproducing trademarks such as the Disney logo would constitute infringement.
Although users may have fun turning their dogs into Disney posters, it also brings copyright infringement. Microsoft also stated that it will handle copyright complaints regarding content created with Image Creator.
