Microsoft has quietly shut down its long-standing Film & TV app on Windows and Xbox platforms. The company announced that users will no longer be able to rent or purchase movies or TV series through the app. Previously purchased content will remain in user accounts, but new purchases will not be possible.

The decision was revealed in a brief announcement on Microsoft’s support page. The statement states that Microsoft will no longer offer new film or TV series content on Microsoft.com, the Microsoft Store on Windows, and the Xbox Store.
This confirms that the Film & TV app will no longer be used as an active sales channel. The app had been selling digital content for Xbox and Windows users since 2012.
The app was initially introduced as Xbox Video. Microsoft aimed to compete with platforms like Apple iTunes and Amazon Prime Video with this service. It was positioned as part of its vision to integrate digital entertainment content into the gaming console with an “everything in one” concept, particularly during the Xbox One era. However, over the years, the app has remained in the background and has largely lost its place in the digital content ecosystem.
Users will be able to keep previously purchased movies and series in their accounts and continue to play them at the highest supported resolution. However, this content cannot be transferred to different platforms. Only users in the US can sync certain content with other digital stores using the Movies Anywhere platform. This service is not available in Turkey.
Microsoft’s decision follows similar recent decisions regarding other native Windows apps, such as Mail, Calendar, and Maps. As the company continues to phase out native services, its strategic direction in the digital content ecosystem is also shifting.
Despite the closure of the Movies & TV app, users can continue to use third-party digital content platforms like Apple TV and Prime Video on their Xbox and Windows devices.
