Auto SR (Automatic Super Resolution) uses an AI-supported NPU (Neural Processing Unit) instead of a GPU. This allows the GPU to handle rendering tasks while Auto SR enhances image quality. This positively impacts both performance and energy efficiency, providing higher performance with less energy consumption.

Unlike existing upscaling technologies such as AMD FSR, Nvidia DLSS, and Intel XeSS, Auto SR works without the need to change the game’s rendering method. When you start a game, Auto SR automatically kicks in and works its magic.

Initially, 11 games will be compatible with this technology: BeamNG.drive, Borderlands 3, Control (DX11), Dark Souls III, God of War, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2, and The Witcher 3. But don’t worry, this list will expand in the future.

The Auto SR AI model is quite large, which may cause some latency. Microsoft notes that this issue is noticed by very few players but acknowledges that even a few milliseconds of delay can be significant in competitive games. So, if you are a professional e-sports player, you might want to be cautious about this.

In July, more laptops featuring Ryzen AI 300 and Intel Lunar Lake processors with Auto SR support will be released. This will help the Auto SR technology reach a wider audience.
