Surface Duo reaches end of life, Microsoft to focus on foldables

Ana sayfa / Smartphones

Making interesting experiments in the smartphone market, Microsoft released a model that could be an alternative to foldable models three years ago. The device named Surface Duo, which has a dual screen, is losing update support after three years. This shows that Microsoft has lost interest in dual displays.

End of support for Microsoft Surface Duo

The Microsoft Surface Duo, first released in September 2020, has reached the end of its software support. On the phone’s third anniversary, Microsoft has officially ended updates for the dual-screen Android model.

Surface Duo was Microsoft’s first attempt at a foldable phone design. The device featured two 5.6-inch displays and when unfolded, it created an 8.1-inch screen. Although innovative with its design, it failed to catch market trends with details such as the Snapdragon 855 chipset and single rear camera.

Apple and Microsoft objected to the European Union!

Apple and Microsoft have objected to the Digital Markets Act proposed by the European Union. Here's the reason why!

The Surface Duo, which debuted with Android 10, received two Android upgrades, to Android 11 and then to Android 12L, designed specifically for large-screen devices.

But with the end of software support, users will no longer receive any updates from Microsoft. The end of support includes security packages. So with Android 12L, it will also be vulnerable to security vulnerabilities.

Surface Duo 2, which was introduced in late 2021, hit the shelves with more powerful features such as Snapdragon 888 and triple rear camera. The device, which currently uses the Android 12L system, will receive updates until October 2024.

Microsoft has no plans for Surface Duo 3 after two years. It is also rumored that the company is focusing on foldable designs instead of dual-screen phones.
