Microsoft continues to lure users to Microsoft Edge and Bing instead of Google. Most recently, some Windows 11 users reported receiving pop-up ads asking them to select Bing as the default search engine in Chrome. The company withdrew the Bing ads in response to the backlash.
Bing ads targeting Chrome users on Windows 11 canceled
Microsoft has created ads targeting Windows 11 users who choose Google as their default search engine. The ads, which appear in the Chrome app on Windows 11, appear in certain parts of the browser and emphasize Bing’s features.
Microsoft’s intrusive ads caused a stir on social media. Some users reported that pop-up ads appeared over games and other apps. This drew backlash for ignoring notification settings.
After numerous user complaints, Microsoft said it would re-evaluate Bing ads. A company spokesperson said in a statement that they are aware of the problem. Tests also confirmed that annoying Bing notifications no longer appear.
Microsoft started to pay more attention to the Bing search engine in Windows 10 and 11, especially after the AI-powered Bing Chat. On several occasions, it even showed ads inviting users to Bing when searching in Chrome.
It is normal for the company to invite users to Bing with such ads. Recent research has shown that Bing, which had a 3 percent share in January this year, is currently hovering around 2.9 percent.
