Microsoft continues to restrict unactivated Windows systems. Finally, it has been revealed that some of the restrictions will be applied to the Edge browser. As part of the latest Edge Canary release, the company has blocked non-activated Windows from accessing certain browser settings.
Edge restriction on the way for Windows non-activators
With Windows 11, Microsoft has started to impose major restrictions on unactivated systems. Foremost among these are the restrictions applied in Windows Settings. Users are not allowed to access customization and personalization features.
A similar restriction seems to be applied to Edge. In a warning seen in Edge Canary, Microsoft states, “We noticed that Windows is not activated, some customizations are limited.”
The changes are visible in Edge Canary version 101.0.1264.37. However, it is not clear exactly which Edge settings will be restricted. Next-generation features such as VPN and ad blockers may be blocked on Windows systems that do not have them enabled.
It should be noted that the restriction for Edge is in the Canary version for now. So it does not affect users in the stable version yet. Microsoft may be planning to gauge user reaction before wider deployment.
Edge has also been paying attention to browser optimizations for a while. In the screenshots that emerged, it was seen that RAM limitation can be done from the Resource Control section in the Settings section in Edge. Users will have the option to restrict memory continuously or only while playing games.
