Microsoft, which has been investing in virtual/mixed reality technologies for a while, was faster than Apple in this context. The company, which released a pair of glasses called HoloLens, also made Windows compatible with mixed reality. However, the latest plans revealed that the Mixed Reality division will be closed.
Mixed Reality is being reorganized
Microsoft announced that it is restructuring its Mixed Reality division. In this context, the company also confirmed that it will make some layoffs. Speaking on the subject, a Microsoft spokesperson underlined that they have restructured the Mixed Reality team.
It is possible to say that Microsoft has gradually withdrawn from the augmented / virtual reality market in recent years. This means that the company’s restructuring move is not surprising. For example, in recent months, it has fully open-sourced the development of the Mixed Reality Toolkit.
It also announced late last year that the Windows Mixed Reality Portal would no longer be supported. He stated that he would not use this portal in Windows versions starting in late 2026. This means that we will not see a VisionOS competitor Windows.
It should be noted that Microsoft’s customer-oriented Windows Mixed Reality glasses did not have a good sales success. Support for virtual platforms in Windows is also waning. Windows 11 does not support any existing WMR glasses.
On the other hand, the HoloLens 2 developed by Microsoft will continue to be part of the US military for now. The company also said it will continue to support its customers and partners. However, it is possible to say that HoloLens will not grow too much.
