Mistral AI is now valued at €5.8 billion, or $6.2 billion, according to sources familiar with the investment. This valuation is particularly notable given that the company was founded just a year ago by alumni from Meta and Google. The company’s valuation has nearly tripled since December when it raised €385 million.

Since the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022, there has been a surge of investment in generative A.I. technology, which can perform tasks such as answering questions in humanlike prose, creating images, and writing software code. For instance, Elon Musk recently raised $6 billion for his start-up, xAI, and OpenAI has secured roughly $13 billion from Microsoft.
