Model Y Performance priced near Model 3P, offers more car for modest premium

Tesla’s 2026 Model Y Performance has officially launched in the US, and while it just missed the federal EV tax credit window, some buyers managed to lock in the discount before the deadline. Those early movers effectively drove off with the fastest Model Y ever for under $50,000, something unlikely to happen again soon.

As of October 1, the Model Y Performance retails for $57,490, or $59,130 with destination and order fees. That places it only $2,500 above the Model 3 Performance, a gap smaller than expected considering the size and capability differences.

The new Performance variant is also $3,700 cheaper than the outgoing 2020 version at launch, making this refresh one of Tesla’s more aggressively priced upgrades in recent years.

Tesla incentives in China bring October perks for Model 3 and Model Y buyers

Tesla rolls out October incentives in China with free Supercharging, FSD transfers, and interest-free financing across Model 3 and Model Y.

Performance-focused EVs usually sacrifice some range, and the Model Y is no exception. The 2026 Model Y Performance clocks an EPA-estimated 306 miles, about 20 miles less than the AWD version. In Europe, that range difference barely registers on WLTP charts, but in the US, it’s a noticeable drop.

Still, the performance specs hold their own:

That last item the tow hitch comes at no added cost, adding a $1,300 value by default. For those planning to tow, this alone offsets part of the price jump from the Model 3P.

Tesla says the Model Y Performance uses high-density battery cells to boost capacity. However, unlike in Europe where Performance and AWD trims now match in range, the US version still lags noticeably behind. The reason for the gap is unclear, but it may come down to EPA testing standards or regional hardware differences.

Either way, the slightly shorter range won’t be a dealbreaker for buyers prioritizing speed, space, and utility over long-haul efficiency.

At just $2,500 more than the Model 3 Performance, the 2026 Model Y Performance adds:

It’s not the range king, and it won’t qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit unless you already acted. But even without it, the refreshed Performance trim brings real value to the table, especially for buyers who need more car without sacrificing thrill.
