Telegram recently announced that it will offer payment partnerships to its users. The program for channel owners will allow admins to earn money from ads displayed on channels. The service, called Advertising Platform, will make it possible to monetize Telegram.
Telegram will start paying channel owners
With the announcement of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, the details of the program became clear. Accordingly, channel owners will be able to receive 50 percent of the revenue generated from ads shown to members on the channel. Telegram will pay these earnings to channel owners using TON Coin, the cryptocurrency that powers the TON blockchain.
The TON blockchain was developed as the infrastructure of the Grams stablecoin project with Telegram support. However, this initiative was canceled in 2020 due to problems with government agencies. Telegram will leverage TON’s technology for its new advertising system.
Channel owners will be able to convert their TON coins into standard currencies or pay Telegram to further promote their channels. According to CEO Pavel Durov, this will encourage more content creation and engagement on the platform.
According to analytics reports, Telegram has more than 800 million users who receive 500 billion views on their channels every month. But so far, only 10 percent of channel views can be monetized. The Advertising Platform will turn free content in the app into a revenue opportunity.
With the announcement, the price of TON Coin increased by about 40 percent. It also includes Telegram among competing platforms such as YouTube and X.
