Mortal Kombat 2 was ready to strike this October, but Warner Bros. and New Line have hit pause. The upcoming sequel has been delayed and is now scheduled to launch in theaters on May 15, 2026.
New release date moves Mortal Kombat 2 into blockbuster territory
Originally set for October 24, Mortal Kombat 2 will now drop at the start of summer, a window typically reserved for high-stakes blockbusters. While May releases are usually dominated by Marvel, this shift may actually work in MK’s favor. With Avengers: Doomsday now slated for December 2026, Mortal Kombat 2 won’t face off against a Marvel giant in its opening weeks.
That move could give the film more breathing room than the crowded October slate would have offered.
Karl Urban leads as Johnny Cage in it
The Boys’ star Karl Urban headlines the sequel as Johnny Cage, a fan-favorite character who was notably absent from the first film. In a clever marketing stunt earlier this year, Warner Bros. dropped a faux-trailer for a fake Cage movie titled Uncaged Fury, followed by the actual Mortal Kombat 2 teaser a day later.
Urban joins a returning cast that includes:
- Ludi Lin as Liu Kang
- Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade
- Mehcad Brooks as Jax
- Adeline Rudolph making her debut as Kitana
Mortal Kombat content continues outside theaters
While fans wait for the sequel, there’s still something coming in 2025. Warner Bros. and NetherRealm Studios are releasing the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection on December 12. This retro bundle includes the first four arcade classics, as well as Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Special Forces.
Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 1 has wrapped its DLC roadmap, meaning no new content is planned for the current title.
MK fans hoping to see Johnny Cage on the big screen will need to hold out a little longer—but with a prime release slot and a fan-favorite lead, it might just be worth the wait.
