NASA has launched a comprehensive initiative to harness the power of artificial intelligence to fight climate change. By creating a digital twin of Earth, it aims to use AI-based models to predict extreme weather events and other effects of climate change.
NASA strengthens climate change efforts with AI
This initiative is being realized with an AI model developed by NASA in collaboration with IBM Research. The model is based on data collected through NASA’s Harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 projects and offers an innovative approach to preventing climate change.
The AI model includes data from NASA’s Landsat 8 and 9 satellites, as well as the European Union’s Copernicus Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B satellites, providing a comprehensive dataset. This vast database allows scientists to analyze environmental variables and predict future climate and weather events.
Manil Maskey, head of NASA’s Data Science Office, notes that this model is versatile, like a “Swiss Army knife,” and can be used in various research projects. NASA makes this AI model free and publicly accessible, enabling scientists worldwide to use it in their own research.
This strategy allows experts from different disciplines to collaborate and develop more effective solutions against climate change. The digital twin of Earth has garnered significant interest in the scientific community, allowing many researchers to conduct deeper analyses of climate change using the data it provides.
NASA’s long-term goal is to develop a series of AI models to better understand climate and environmental changes. Working with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Nvidia, and various universities, NASA aims to create a digital twin of Earth in the future.
This digital twin, by precisely predicting climate and environmental behaviors, will help scientists develop effective strategies. NASA’s use of artificial intelligence and large datasets to combat climate change brings an innovative and forward-thinking approach to this complex issue.
All these efforts aim to reduce the impact of climate change and leave a more sustainable world for future generations. What do you think about climate change, which has become increasingly evident in recent years? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.
