Netflix has dealt an unexpected blow to its goals in the gaming industry. It has closed the doors of its gaming studio Team Blue, which is not even two years old. This shows that it has given up on big-budget productions.
Netflix’s gaming studio couldn’t even last two years
Netflix is preparing to officially close the studio it established to make big-budget (AAA) games. Working under the Netflix Games umbrella, Team Blue was dissolved in less than two years. Team Blue, which was founded in 2023, was part of Netflix’s major investment in the gaming industry beyond mobile games.
The studio aimed to develop high-budget games that would work on multiple platforms and devices. Netflix had transferred prominent names such as Chacko Sonny from Blizzard Entertainment, Joseph Staten from Bungie and 343 Industries, and Rafael Grassetti from Sony Santa Monica Studio to manage Team Blue.
However, it has been revealed that the company has finally decided to close the studio. The reasons behind this decision are not yet known, but it should be noted that Team Blue has not published any games during its short life.
Netflix’s work in the gaming field has so far focused mainly on mobile users. Despite having more than 70 games, sources also show that less than 1 percent of Netflix subscribers play these games on a daily basis.
The closure of Team Blue also shows what kind of strategy Netflix wants to follow. The company may be reconsidering its goals for console and PC games. It is unclear whether Netflix will continue with its own studios in the future or switch to a third-party publishing model.
