The streaming landscape is changing for Netflix users in Canada, as they become the testing grounds for the platform’s new policies. After the streamer’s move to increase the cost of account sharing, they’ve now decided to phase out the basic subscription plan for Canadian users, according to The Winnipeg Free Press.
Changes for existing subscribers
Fear not, if you are currently on the basic plan, Netflix won’t be kicking you out. However, if you decide to switch plans or cancel your subscription, you won’t have the option to re-subscribe to the basic plan. For new subscribers, the basic plan is no longer an option, and existing subscribers on other plans will soon lose the option to switch to the basic plan. Presently, the basic plan costs $9.99 (CAD) monthly, the ad-supported basic plan is at $5.99, the standard plan is at $16.49, and the premium at $20.99.
Netflix Canada’s move towards ad-promoted subscriptions
In November 2022, despite claims to the contrary, Netflix introduced an ad-supported plan in Canada, the US, and ten other countries. Now, with the decision to axe the basic plan, it appears Netflix aims to usher more viewers towards an experience filled with advertisements.
The reason? Ad-supported plans have proved highly profitable. During 2023’s first quarter, Netflix’s ad-supported basic plan in the US generated more revenue per user than the standard plan. And this happened despite the ad-supported plan being priced at $6.99, much lower than the standard plan’s $15.49.
Impact on the US market
At the moment, there’s no hint that Netflix will make similar changes in the US. But if you’re looking to avoid higher charges or the interruption of ads, you may want to opt for the basic plan now. Currently, in the US, the basic plan is available for $9.99, with the premium plan priced at $19.99.
