Netflix’s Password Sharing Ban Backfires, Resulting in Losses Instead of Profits

Ana sayfa / News

In the past weeks, Netflix introduced a new regulation regarding password sharing. According to this regulation, only single-digit members of a household could use one account. In other words, you can share your password with your parents, spouse, or roommates, but not with people you don’t live with. However, this ban caused more harm than good for Netflix. Here are the details about the Netflix password sharing ban and its consequences…

The Netflix password sharing ban resulted in losses instead of profits!

Netflix, the American-based digital streaming platform, made new regulations in the past weeks. According to these regulations, it is prohibited to share your password with people you don’t live with. If you share your password, Netflix charges an additional fee as a penalty for each device that accesses the account from locations far away. Netflix aimed to increase its revenue with these charges. However, things didn’t go as planned.

Netflix was particularly criticized on Twitter. Other streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video made fun of Netflix and then made posts saying things like “we will never need such bans.” Netflix users, in response to this decision, started the hashtag #CancelNetflix on Twitter. When looking at the tweets under this hashtag, it was observed that many users actually deactivated their accounts.

Considering the sarcastic remarks from other broadcasting companies, user reactions, and account cancellations, it is hard to say that things are going well for Netflix. The company announced that it aims to report an increase in profitability in the coming days. However, there is no official statement regarding the actual profit rates from Netflix.

How can I share my password on Netflix without getting caught by the password sharing ban?

Netflix offers two options for users who want to share their Netflix accounts with someone outside of their household:

  1. Membership Transfer: Someone in your account can have their own membership and pay the subscription fee themselves. By transferring their profiles to a new account, they can have their individual subscription separate from the main account.
  2. Share the Account for $7.99: As another option, you can share your Netflix account with someone who doesn’t live in the same household. For this, you need to subscribe to the “Netflix Account Sharing” plan. This option is offered at a monthly fee of $7.99. The person using the shared account password can access Netflix from outside your location. However, this option is not available to all subscribers, and those who subscribe using someone else’s account or third-party services are not included in this plan.
